A Bittersweet Farewell: Reflections on My First Year of Tutoring

As another academic year draws to a close and my current cohort of students have finished their exams, I find myself experiencing that familiar bittersweet feeling that comes with saying goodbye. This year marked my first venture into the world of tutoring, and what a journey it has been.

Building Meaningful Connections

Over the past months, I've had the privilege of developing close working relationships with each of my students. What struck me most was how I genuinely enjoyed getting to know them not just as learners, but as individuals with their own unique personalities, aspirations, and challenges. Supporting them through their English Language GCSE journey felt less like work and more like a calling.

There's something truly special about being invited into a student's educational journey in such an intimate way. It felt like a privilege to witness their growth, to boost their confidence when they doubted themselves, and to see their faces light up when concepts finally clicked. Creating a relaxed, positive environment became my mission – one that stood in stark contrast to the bustling energy of their big school classrooms.

The Power of a Relaxed Learning Environment

The difference between my teaching role in large classrooms and my tutoring sessions couldn't be more pronounced. In my regular teaching position, I often notice students hesitating to ask questions, perhaps feeling self-conscious in front of their peers or overwhelmed by the pace of a larger group setting.

However, during my tutoring sessions, I've been consistently amazed by how freely questions flow. Students who might remain silent in a classroom of thirty suddenly become inquisitive, engaged, and unafraid to explore their uncertainties. This transformation reinforces something I've always believed: you learn better when you feel relaxed and safe to make mistakes.

The intimate environment I've worked to create has allowed for deeper conversations about language, more personalised feedback, and the kind of supportive atmosphere where genuine learning flourishes. It's reminded me why I fell in love with education in the first place – those moments when you can truly connect with a learner and help them unlock their potential.

Looking Ahead: What's Next for Achieve English?

Having dipped my toe into the tutoring world for the first time this academic year, I can confidently say I'm hooked. The experience has been so rewarding that I'm excited to announce more tutoring opportunities for the 2025-2026 academic year.

This first year has taught me invaluable lessons about the unique dynamics of small groups and one-on-one learning, the importance of building trust with students, and the incredible impact that personalised attention can have on a young person's confidence and academic performance.

Your Child's Journey for 2025-2026

As we look toward the new academic year, many parents are already thinking about how to best support their children's educational journey. Whether your child is preparing for their GCSEs, looking to build confidence in English Language, or simply needs that extra support to reach their full potential, I want you to know that I'm here.

The relationships I've built this year have shown me the profound difference that dedicated, personalised support can make.
